Most of our ladies now understand the true value of
education that why even when some of them give birth during their school year
they don't let that become an obstacle to them. They continue with their
education and still take care of their babies although most of them actually
put their baby in care of their mothers while some don't enjoy such opportunity.
Although it is now becoming a common trend among our
ladies to carry their child to school and attend classes, most lecturers from
what I was able to gather don't like this idea, they see it as a distraction to
their class. More often than not those ladies that are found guilty of bringing
their child into the classroom are asked to leave the class room, most especially
when the baby start crying.
In Jerusalem something of this nature happened, a lady
brought her child to the lecture hall because she was unable to get a
babysitter and as the lecture was going on the baby started to cry. Feeling
embarrassed the lady got up and started to walk out of the class but you won’t
believe what happened next, the Professor saw her and called her back, he
collected the baby from her and told her to go have her seat, Professor Sydney
Engelberg soothed the baby in his arms and continued his lecture. Professor Engleberg,
a father of four and grandfather of five, he is known to let ladies attend his
lectures with their babies and they can even breastfeed in the middle of the
class.
Now let be honest, how many Nigerian lecturers can do
that? Many would not even allow you into their class let alone allow you feed
them talk less of taking them and soothing them in their arms.
“It’s not right
to remove a woman’s right to education because of having children”, words of the
Professor himself.
