To
be honest the proper words that can be used to describe DaGrin to the fullest
hasn’t been created so pardon me for using these understatement words in trying to describe him. He was young, he
had an incredible potential, and he was going to make history with his condemn
style of rapping. In one of his songs he said “mo ti je e ya re mo ti jale re” meaning he has suffered and he was
once a pick pocket, this only proves that DaGrin was from to the street and his
album C.E.O (Chief Executive Omoitan)
also testify to his street OT.
Like
I said any word that we want to use to describe DaGrin can’t do justice to
someone of his calibre, someone that his death made April 22 2010 a black day
in Nigeria history. His entrance into
the music industry saw a new revolution to the rap game in Nigeria becoming
part of the people that have changed the face of rap music after the likes of
Junior and Pretty, Edris Abdulkareem, Mode9 and Ruggedman.
His
deep ghetto lyrical verses that says what virtually everyone from the street
are going through and his talented ability to delivery in a style that many
people never thought would hold so much ground; Yoruba rap style made him a
Yoruba Rap Activist. DaGrin gave the Yoruba Rap Style a new look, he gave it a
different sound that is making everyone now doing it with so much confident, some
say he was the creator of real Yoruba hip hop. Minus the fact that what he says
in his track were about him it also relate to what was happening on the street, this together with other skills made DaGrin an household name and also
becoming the most sought after artiste who blew up depending only on his talent
and hunger for success.
It
5 years and just like he said “if I die
make you no cry for” we are not crying we are celebrating the wonderful
short lived life of Yoruba Rap Revolutionist, DaGrin aka Grin Face, aka lyrical
weeree aka eminiomolo ko si omolo. We can’t begin to imagine what it would be
like if you were still here but we shall forever try to make sure you never die
in our heart because inside there to us you are still rocking the mic.
